How you can help: volunteer and donate supplies

Posted on 01/21/10

  • Supplies:

We remain grateful for the outpouring of support that PIH received in response to the post-earthquake needs in Haiti. Now, over a year after the disaster, we have transitioned out of our emergency response mode, and continue to work on bringing long-term health to Haiti. It is our hope that this will be achieved in part through the construction of the National Teaching Hospital in Mirebalais, and the addition of rehabilitation and expanded mental health services

Our approach to supply and materials has also shifted away from the earlier emergency-response mode. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the need for orthopedic and wound care materials was immense, and many donations were sent before they could be vetted. As a result, our staff in Haiti was on the receiving end of valuable donations, but also some inappropriate or unnecessary items. It is particularly difficult for our Haiti staff to sort, catalog and store materials in a mixed box of items.

As a result of our experience after the earthquake, we have amended our donation policy to be sure that only necessary items in good condition are sent to our hospitals in Haiti. Please review the information below and contact medicaldonations@pih.org if you have additional questions.
  • Volunteers in Haiti:

    December 20, 2011

PIH (and our sister organizations, like Zanmi Lasante in Haiti) works within the Ministry of Health infrastructure, strengthening public health systems, so we train and hire local medical professionals and support staff instead of relying on volunteer teams. In keeping with this vision, we are responding to the recent cholera outbreak by mobilizing a strong network of community health workers, Haitian clinicians, and partner organizations already on the ground in Haiti.

There are a number of organizations whose scope of work places volunteers in helpful and meaningful roles with grassroots organizations. Organizations like http://www.globalvolunteernetwork.org/ are great places to start looking.

Some other organizations that accept volunteers in Haiti:
